It’s summer time! Don’t waste your summer sitting at home, get out and be active while having fun. Columbia provides lots of fun opportunities, so don’t miss out on all the action! You don’t have to workout in a gym to reap the benefits of exercise. Research shows that doing activities you actually enjoy will help you stick with them long-term; so find something you love and do it!
Paddle boarding on Lake Murray
Columbia has many rental places to rent kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards. Enjoy a day on the river or lake with a friend. If you want a guided tour with site seeing check out Adventure Carolina or Carolina Outdoors Adventure. They have many different activities and events for all levels and ages. In fact, all of us here at ENP went paddle boarding this past weekend on Lake Murray! An hour of touring paddle boarding can burn 600-700 calories!
Congaree National Park
Take a hike at one of Columbia’s beautiful parks:
Harbison State Forest Park, Congaree National Park, Sesquicentennial State Park, or Saluda Shoals Park.
Take an adventure and try a new hiking trail every time you visit. Bring your dog or pack a picnic and enjoy the outdoors.
Check out Discover South Carolina’s website for a list of SC’s state parks!
Play on the beach!
Going to the beach this summer? Bring a fun, active game with you to keep your body moving. Play catch, beach volleyball, or badminton. On the really hot days enjoy the water while boogie boarding, body surfing or stand up paddle boarding. Depending on what exactly it is you’re doing on the beach from building a sandcastle to boogie boarding to running, you can burn 300-800 calories an hour!
It’s never too late for a new hobby or goal for the summer. Columbia has a wide selection of races ranging from 5k to marathons this summer. Sign up for a race for fun or for a personal goal. Encourage a family member or friend to compete with you.
Check out these events calendars to see what’s coming up:
